Kentucky Derby Schedule

by Alan Karre Jr

The Kentucky Derby is known to be the bang of horse racing but how does one get qualified to race in such an event? In the past, owners would need to insure a spot in the kentucky derby by purse winnings on particular tracks throughout the year and just recently Churchill Downs decided to pursue another direction. To race in this years $2 million Kentucky Derby owners now must collect enough running points in previous races to guarantee a spot which is limited to 24 horses in the main event.

This new kentucky derby point system is setup in which 36 races will be ran for approximately 10 weeks and is being called the “Road to the Kentucky Derby”.  This Road to the Kentucky Derby schedule will be divided into two phases in which each phases overs unique points for each race. The second schedule will contain higher competitive horses than the first stage so farther the races go on higher the competition in most circumstances.

Kentucky Derby Prep Schedule

The Kentucky Derby Prep Schedule includes 19 races with a running distance of at least one mile. History speaking these first 19 races have been used as a starting point for purses on previous years of the kentucky derby to determine who will run in the Kentucky Derby. The points are distributed on a 10-4-2-1 scale for the derby prep schedule in which the points increase later on in the championship league.

Once these races are complete the top 20 point earners are guaranteed a spot in the Kentucky Derby. Although in the past some filly horses have won the Derby and been entered by purse money alone this year and years down the road they will have to earn there way just like the rest of the horses by needing to accumulate enough winning points.

A majority of the people who visit on May 05th are visitors and are not aware with local parties and celebrations. Louisville used to offer what they call Derby Cruising in which part of the city would join up and drive motorcycles, antique rides, and other forms of transportation. It’s an activity the citizens and visitors from the area looked up to every year however good things dont always last when the city realized it was having problems protecting visitors and travelers from local gangs and violence so had to shut it down.

Tourist however are still more than welcome to join all the local action near downtown on Broadway street which is famous for having huge groups of parties that barbeque on the grill and enjoy a few brewskies. If your not a local or not really familiar with the area it’s best to start walking west on Broadway and continue on until you found the right spot for you and your friends. A majority of Louisville businesses and restaurants are friendly however its always recommended you dont bring loads of cash with you and try to stick with using a debit or credit card. If you somehow end up by the river you have gone a tad bit to far and should head back in the direction you was coming from.
